The world got its first pyramid in the form of the Step Pyramid at Saqqara that was built in 2750 BCE for King Djoser. Before this, the Egyptian kings would be buried in a rectangular mud-brick tomb called mastaba. However, King Djoser's architect, Imhotep, placed a number of mastabas of decreasing size one on top of the other to make the world's first pyramid.

Obelisks were heavy monuments made of stone. Each obelisk was placed in a public place. In ancient Egypt, obelisks were often built in pairs. Some were not high, and others very high. An obelisk has four sides, but towards the top, there is a pyramid shaped point. In ancient Egypt, these structures were cut from one huge piece of incredibly heavy stone. The Ancient Egyptians found a way to stand these huge stones upright after they had been decorated and carved with writing telling of the wonderful life and great achievements of the person each obelisk honored. The pharaohs ordered these huge monuments built for them so that they would be remembered for generations. The writings on the obelisks tell us a lot about the Ancient Egyptian civilization. These obelisks still have an impact today. For example, the Washington Monument is an obelisk, based off the obelisks invented in ancient Egypt.

This picture shows how Ancient Egyptians marked the days of the month by following the phases of the Moon. The ancient Egyptians were the first people to have invented a solar calendar. It showed the position of the Earth, when revolving around the Sun. It contained twelve months, each with 30 days, plus a 5 extra days at the end of the year. There was a miscalculation in the ancient solar calendar as it did not calculate the additional fraction of the day. Consequently, this calendar showed wrong months and dates. However, this was later corrected by Ptolemy III Euergetes in 238 BC. When he added one day to 365 days every 4 years the calendar showed accurate calculations.
